Law School for Artists: Contracts 101

Law School for Artists: Contracts 101
Saturday, September 22nd, 10:00a-12:00p

If you’re a freelancer, a legal contract is your best bet to protect your rights and make sure you get paid. But reading and understanding contracts can be intimidating! This class will help unravel the mystery and introduce you to must-know freelance contract basics. No prior experience necessary!

In this two hour class, Katie Lane, author of Work Made For Hire, will teach you

  • How to read a contract;
  • How to identify some of the most common contract clauses and what they mean;
  • How to mark up a contract during negotiations; and
  • What to do if there is no contract.

You’ll leave the class with a better understanding of how contracts work and the confidence to ask for terms that will protect you and your work.

You’ll walk away with a short field guide to some of the most common contractual clauses and a check list to use whenever you’re reviewing a new contract.

This class is intended to help you expand your freelance education and is not legal advice. Given the short timeline, we will not have an opportunity to address specific conflicts students are having with clients.

Space is limited to 12 students per class; tuition is $50.
